Job Description

What success looks like in this role:

We are seeking a motivated Monitoring Engineer with 3 years plus of experience, including 2 years plus administering Nagios XI, to join our team. The ideal candidate works independently with minimal guidance, takes initiative to expand and improve monitoring coverage, and is comfortable operating in a mixed Windows/Linux environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and administer the Nagios XI platform, including upgrades, patches, plugin updates, backups, and general platform health.
  • Onboard new devices, servers, and services into monitoring as infrastructure grows, ensuring no gaps in coverage.
  • Design, build, and maintain custom checks and monitoring scripts (NRPE, NCPA, SNMP, custom plugins) across Windows and Linux systems.
  • Tune alerting and thresholds to reduce false positives while ensuring real issues are reliably detected.
  • Monitor and optimize platform performance, including capacity, check latency, and database health.
  • Document configurations, runbooks, and processes to keep monitoring logic transparent and maintainable.
  • Partner with IT, network, systems, and application teams to identify monitoring gaps and translate business-critical services into checks.
  • Proactively evaluate new plugins, integrations, and automation opportunities to continuously improve the platform.

You will be successful in this role if you have:

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3 years plus of systems/network administration experience, including 2 years plus administering Nagios XI (or Nagios Core with strong XI familiarity) in a production environment.
  • Solid scripting ability across platforms — Bash and/or Python for Linux checks, and PowerShell for Windows checks via NCPA.
  • Working knowledge of SNMP, NRPE/NCPA, syslog, and common network/server monitoring protocols.
  • Understanding of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, ports, firewalls) as they relate to monitoring connectivity.
  • Self-motivated and able to operate independently with minimal oversight.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate technical monitoring data for other teams and leadership.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with configuration management tools (Ansible, SCCM, etc.) for automating monitoring deployment.
  • Experience integrating Nagios with ticketing system (ServiceNow)
